A 16-year-old boy has died after being struck by a train in Norwalk, Connecticut, and two other people are now facing trespassing charges in connection with the incident, according to News 12 New York. MTA police say three boys were on the tracks at the time, but were not authorized to be there.
The three were a 16-year-old, a 17-year-old, and a 20-year-old, police said. It was the 16-year-old who was struck by the train, on a bridge overpass, as the group was in an area along the tracks where they were not permitted to be.
The train involved was traveling from Danbury heading to South Norwalk when it hit the teenager, according to the station. The incident happened at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday night, along the tracks in the area behind the Watershed Hotel on Main Avenue.
Norwalk fire crews worked to remove the boy from underneath the train and move him into a passenger car. He was then taken to Norwalk Hospital, where he died about an hour later, the station reported. MTA police have since identified him as Jeffrey Ordonez, a 16-year-old from Norwalk, who died in his hometown.
The other two boys were not injured in the incident. However, MTA police say they were detained and are now facing trespassing charges, after investigators determined that the group had been on the tracks without authorization when the train came through.
There were 25 passengers on board the train at the time of the incident, according to News 12 New York. None of them were injured, though they had to transfer to a backup train, and Danbury branch service was temporarily suspended while police responded to the scene.
MTA police said the investigation into what happened remains ongoing. Officials had not released further details as they continued to look into how the three came to be on the tracks and the circumstances that led to the fatal collision on the bridge overpass.
