Australia's Matildas have suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Mexico in Newcastle, in the first of two friendlies between the two sides. The result was a disappointing one for the home team in front of its own fans.
On the balance of play, the Matildas had the better of the contest. They dominated much of the possession and territory throughout the match, but they failed to be clinical in front of goal and could not convert their chances.
The decisive moment came late. A stoppage-time goal secured the victory for the visitors, leaving Australia to rue the opportunities it had been unable to take during the game.
The defeat carries some historical weight. It is just the second time Mexico has beaten the Matildas, and the first time it has done so since 2004, making the loss a notable result for the visiting side.
Within the camp, the match was framed as part of the team's build-up. Players noted that they had created enough chances to win the game themselves and described the fixture as useful preparation, adding that it was good to face teams that challenge them in different ways.
There will be a quick chance for a response. The two sides are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday night at Western Sydney Stadium, in the second of their two friendlies.
