Two young children have died after being hit by a car in Sydney's south-west, in a tragedy that closed a major road and prompted a police investigation. The children were aged just one and five.
According to police, the two children were near the Cumberland Highway in Cabramatta, together with a parent, when they were struck by the car. The incident unfolded in an area used by many motorists and pedestrians.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and aerial vision from the area showed several ambulances treating the young victims. The two children were treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical staff, both children died, turning what had begun as an ordinary outing into a devastating loss for the family and for the emergency workers who responded.
A 33-year-old woman was also injured in the incident and was treated by paramedics at the scene. The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, was arrested as officers began piecing together exactly what had occurred.
All southbound lanes on the Cumberland Highway remained closed while emergency services and investigators worked at the scene, with transport officials advising motorists to take alternative routes. Police indicated they would provide further detail at a press conference as the investigation continued.
