Police divers have recovered the body of a girl, believed to be about six or seven years old, from waters in Sydney's inner west. The grim discovery followed a search of the area earlier in the day.
The search had been launched after the body of the girl's father was found in waters off Bayview. Police said they had received a call from a friend of the man, who had expressed concern for the welfare of the pair.
According to police, the girl and her father had rented a boat to sail along the Parramatta River that morning. The outing was the last known movement of the two before the alarm was raised.
Just before midday, a passer-by noticed a body floating in the water around the Concord area. That sighting led officers to the location where divers later recovered the child's body.
The man is believed to have been from Westmead. Detectives at the scene said they were still trying to determine exactly what had happened on the water.
Police indicated that one definite line of inquiry is whether the deaths were a case of domestic violence, though the investigation remains ongoing.
