The union representing WestJet flight attendants says a tentative deal with the airline includes an 18 percent wage increase over three years, according to CBC News. CUPE said the agreement was reached on Monday, marking a breakthrough after a tense round of bargaining between the airline and its cabin crew.
Beyond the pay raise, the union said the tentative deal also includes pay for work done on the ground. That had been a central grievance for flight attendants, who said they were not being compensated for the duties they carry out while an aircraft is not in the air.
According to CBC News, the agreement additionally provides for increased time off for flight attendants. The union pointed to the change as one of several improvements secured at the table alongside the wage gains.
The deal also includes higher allowances for food and uniforms, the report said. Together with the raise and the ground-work pay, the union presented the terms as a package meant to address the concerns its members had raised.
The tentative agreement follows a one-day strike by flight attendants over the long weekend. Workers are now set to vote on whether to ratify the deal in the coming weeks, according to the broadcaster.
