WestJet and CUPE, the union representing the airline's flight attendants, have reached a tentative deal at the bargaining table, according to CBC News. A statement said the federal government and Canadians welcome the news that the two parties had come to an agreement.
The statement went on to thank both parties, as well as the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, including the special mediator, for all of their work throughout the bargaining process, the broadcaster reported.
Details of the agreement remained limited in the immediate aftermath, according to CBC News. Reporting from St. John's International Airport, the network said only a few details were beginning to come out about the tentative deal.
Statements had been released by both WestJet and CUPE, the report said, as each side set out its own account of what the agreement contained.
Pay was at the heart of the dispute, according to CBC News. The issue had been central to the disagreement between the airline and the union representing its cabin crew.
WestJet flight attendants had said they were not being paid for the work they do on the ground, the broadcaster reported. That included tasks such as boarding, deplaning and security checks.
The union said the tentative deal helps to address that concern, according to the report. It was one of the points the flight attendants had pointed to in explaining what was at stake in the talks.
