Canada's Under 18 basketball team has pulled off a historic achievement, winning the country's first ever gold medal at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup. The young Canadian players celebrated on the court in Leon, Mexico, moments after climbing to the top step of the podium. For Canadian youth basketball, it is a milestone like no other.
In the final of the competition, Canada came out on top against the United States. It was a tense, nail-biting game, with the outcome decided only in the fourth quarter, when the Canadians managed to push ahead and carry their advantage through to the end. The team said they had competed in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup and won against the USA in the title game.
The win carries special meaning because it ends a long run of American dominance. With this victory, Canada broke a streak of seven straight titles held by the United States at this competition. Until now, the Canadian junior team had never won the trophy, which makes the triumph all the more significant.
The game itself was closely contested from start to finish. The United States led after the first quarter, before Canada fought back in the second to tie the game at halftime. In the third quarter the Canadians took the lead, and the fourth quarter went back and forth before the team finally managed to pull away and secure the win.
One of the moments that stuck with the players was a spectacular attacking play. A Canadian player described how he had the ball, saw a teammate breaking ahead of him and passed it to him, and the teammate then rose up and finished with a dunk over an American defender. The player who watched it unfold said he saw the whole thing in slow motion, calling it one of the best moments of his life.
The emotion of the victory was hard to contain for the young athletes. At the final whistle, one of the players took off his jersey and started running around in celebration, and footage of him jumping onto the scorers' table quickly spread. For these teenagers, the achievement was overwhelming, coming at the end of a game won by the slimmest of margins.
Individual performances were also rewarded. Javion Tyndale was named the most valuable player of the tournament, and the recognition came from a big name in Canadian basketball as well. After receiving the MVP honour, he got a shout-out from star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who posted a picture in appreciation, capping off a memorable day for Canadian basketball.
