An overnight fire has turned deadly in Brampton, Ontario. According to CBC News, a blaze at a home in the city has left one person dead, drawing a heavy emergency response and leaving a residential neighbourhood shaken as crews worked through the night.
The fire broke out in a residential area on the city's road network. It happened at a property near Williams Parkway and Highway 410, where Brampton Fire and Peel Police were called to the scene just after 11:00 PM, according to the report from the scene.
The fire chief described what crews found when they arrived. Firefighters immediately gained access and entered the home, where they located one individual who was removed from the property. Life-saving measures were undertaken, but that person died at the scene despite the efforts.
Authorities have given a basic description of the victim. The person who died was an older man, and he was the only person inside the unit at the time of the fire, meaning no one else is reported to have been hurt in the blaze.
The property itself is a particular type of residence. It is described as a registered multi-dwelling, semi-detached home, and there was significant black smoke damage visible around a window and the roof of a second-floor bedroom area, marking where the fire appeared to take hold.
For those living nearby, the fire was a frightening overnight ordeal. Neighbours said they awoke in the night to the blaze, describing the smell and the sight that greeted them, as emergency crews kept a significant presence at the home into the following hours.
