Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a hit and run in Brampton that unfolded overnight and left a woman in hospital, according to CBC News Toronto. Investigators say the case is now the subject of an active search for the driver who fled the scene.
Emergency crews were called to the Highway 410 northbound off-ramp to Steeles at around 12 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian who had been struck. The location, a busy off-ramp, quickly became the focus of the overnight investigation.
The victim, a woman, was transported to a local trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, police said. The severity of her condition has added urgency to the effort to track down whoever was behind the wheel.
The suspected driver did not remain on the scene after the collision, in what investigators are treating as a fail to remain. That flight from the scene left officers to piece together what happened from the evidence left behind.
At the scene, investigators were able to locate vehicle debris. They believe those parts came from the collision and point to a possible Jeep Cherokee, and said the vehicle they are looking for should have damage to its front bumper and hood.
The off-ramp was closed while police conducted their investigation, but it has since reopened. Officers are now appealing to the public, asking anyone with information, and the driver of the potential Jeep, to come forward.
