One person is dead after a kitchen fire at a Toronto high-rise on Tuesday morning, according to CBC News. The broadcaster reported that emergency crews were called to an apartment building near Sherbourne and Wellesley, in the St. James Town neighbourhood, at around 10:30 a.m. as the fire broke out.

Firefighters made their way up to the 19th floor of the building, where they found smoke, CBC reported. According to the broadcaster, crews located the smoke on that floor and entered a 19th-floor unit as they worked to track down the source of the fire inside the tower.

The smoke in the unit was coming from a small kitchen fire, CBC reported. The broadcaster said crews attended to the blaze and carried out a primary search of the unit as part of their response once they had made it inside.

During that primary search, firefighters found a male with vital signs absent, according to CBC. The broadcaster said the victim was found dead at the scene inside the unit where the kitchen fire had started, high up in the residential building.

The fire has since been put out, and an investigation is now ongoing, CBC reported. The broadcaster said fire officials were working to piece together exactly what happened in the 19th-floor unit that left one person dead.

CBC reported that the victim's identity and exact cause of death have not yet been released. The broadcaster said those details remained pending as the investigation into the fatal high-rise kitchen fire in St. James Town continued.
