One of Canada's last surviving Second World War veterans has died. William Wilson, or Captain Bill as he was known, was 101.
His life was bound up with the Royal Canadian Navy. Wilson served aboard HMCS Ottawa.
He was there for one of the pivotal moments of the war. Wilson took part in the Allied invasion in 1944.
That landing carried enormous weight in the course of the conflict. It was the operation that marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
His connection to that history endured long after the guns fell silent. In 2024, he returned to France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and before the trip he spoke with CBC.
In that conversation, the focus was on what the return meant to him. He was asked what was really important for him to do when he went back to Normandy this time.
Beyond his own service, Wilson made remembrance his life's work. As a veteran, he devoted decades to preserving Canada's military history.
