A four-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle on a street in northeast Edmonton. Police have been piecing together what happened since the weekend, when the incident took place.

According to police, it happened on Sunday, just after 5 p.m. At that time, the girl and her mother were walking in a parking lot near the intersection of 66th Street and 170th Avenue.

Police say the young child broke free while they were in that parking lot. She then ran out onto 66th Street, moving away from the lot and toward the roadway.

It was on 66th Street that the girl was struck by a jeep. The vehicle hit the child after she had made her way onto the street.

People who were nearby reacted right away. Bystanders at the scene tried to save the little girl's life in the moments after she was hit.

The girl was rushed to a children’s hospital for treatment of her injuries. Despite the efforts made on her behalf, she later died from those injuries in hospital.

As they continue to look into the case, police say that neither speed nor impairment is considered to be a factor in what happened.
