Halton police dismantle largest human trafficking ring in force's history

Halton police say they have dismantled what they describe as the largest human trafficking case in the history of the service, crediting a victim who came forward. A 10-month, multi-jurisdiction investigation uncovered 11 additional victims subjected to commercial sexual exploitation. Nine people were arrested, and police seized luxury vehicles, drugs, cash and an estimated $450,000 in jewelry, with 85 charges laid so far.

Halton police say they have dismantled what they are describing as the largest human trafficking case in the history of the service, a sprawling investigation that grew out of a single act of courage. Investigators credited a victim of the ring for coming forward, a decision that set in motion a wide-ranging effort to expose the operation and rescue others caught up in it.

The case began when a woman came forward last September, alerting police to what she had endured. Thanks to her incredible courage, as investigators put it, the force launched an inquiry that would reach far beyond her own experience and expose the scope of the exploitation being carried out by those behind the ring.

What ensued was a large-scale, 10-month, multi-jurisdiction investigation, according to police. The inquiry uncovered an additional 11 victims who had been subjected to commercial sexual exploitation over an extended period of time, revealing a pattern of abuse that had spanned months and crossed jurisdictional lines as detectives pieced the case together.

The investigation culminated in a series of arrests. Police said nine people were arrested as a result of the probe, bringing into custody those they allege were responsible for running the trafficking operation. The number of arrests reflected the scale of the ring that investigators say they were able to break apart.

Officers also seized a substantial haul during the investigation. According to police, they recovered a number of luxury vehicles along with drugs, tens of thousands of dollars in cash and an estimated $450,000 in jewelry. The seizures pointed to the profits investigators say the ring had generated through the exploitation of its victims.

So far, 85 charges have been laid in the case, and police say their investigation is ongoing, with more charges expected. As the case moves forward, authorities have kept the focus on the victims and on the woman whose decision to come forward made the entire operation possible, framing her courage as the turning point that allowed them to dismantle the ring.
