A 70-year-old man charged in a fatal crash at a Richmond Hill daycare centre last year has pleaded guilty to three counts of dangerous driving. According to the information reported by CityNews Toronto, the guilty plea marks a key step in the case that followed the collision at the daycare.
The collision killed one toddler and injured several other children at the daycare centre. The case had drawn attention since the crash occurred at a location intended for the care of young children.
The man, identified as Vinay Kumar Gupta, admitted that he was picking up his two grandchildren with his wife at the time of the incident. According to his account, he tried to park his SUV when the vehicle passed into the daycare.
With the guilty plea now entered, Gupta is set to be sentenced on December 8. The plea covers the three counts of dangerous driving brought against him in connection with the crash at the Richmond Hill daycare.
The crash also had a wider effect on policy regarding daycare safety. According to the report, it prompted the Ford government to commit $20 million to help daycare centres install concrete barriers as a protective measure.
The guilty plea closes one stage of the legal process that began with the collision at the Richmond Hill daycare centre last year. The sentencing scheduled for December 8 will determine the outcome for the 70-year-old man over the crash that killed one toddler and injured several other children.
