Toronto police have renewed their appeal to the public in the unsolved killing of 31-year-old Ding Ping Wang, releasing a new AI-generated composite image of the suspect they believe is responsible. Investigators say they are hopeful that fresh material, combined with a recent breakthrough from a witness, could finally move the long-running case forward almost four years after the shooting.
Wang was found shot dead in his car in the parking lot of a plaza in Scarborough. The shooting occurred on November 12, 2022, and despite years of work the killing has remained unsolved, leaving his family without answers. Police say Wang was targeted, even though he had no criminal background and did not live what officers described as a criminal lifestyle.
The composite released by police was assembled using a witness description together with the work of a police artist, producing a rendering meant to give the public a sense of what the suspect may have looked like. Investigators said the image became possible after a witness came forward recently and provided a description detailed enough to support the artist's work.
Alongside the composite, police released surveillance footage from the plaza recorded on November 11, the day before the shooting. Investigators say the video appears to show the suspect tracing the steps he would later take, and they hope that someone who recognizes the movements or the setting will be prompted to come forward with information.
Police also pointed to distinctive physical details that could help identify the person. They said the suspect is left-handed and has a particular gait, and they have previously released a reenactment video showing how the shooting may have unfolded, including the type of gun involved and the way it was held. The aim, officers said, is to piece the various elements together to jog someone's memory.
Investigators acknowledged they are still not certain why Wang was targeted, and the question of motive remains one of the central unknowns in the case. That uncertainty, they said, is part of why public help is so important, as a single tip could connect the details they have gathered to a name.
Nearly four years into the investigation, police are again urging anyone with information about the suspect's identity to come forward. Officers said they believe there are people who know something, and expressed hope that renewed attention could finally bring a measure of closure to Wang's wife and children.
