A ride through Toronto's Portlands has ended in tragedy. An e-scooter rider in his 40s has died following a crash in the area on Thursday evening, in an incident now being examined by police.
The crash unfolded in the industrial waterfront district on the city's east side. It happened around 7:45 p.m. near Leslie Street and Unwin Avenue, where emergency crews were called to the scene.
First responders arrived to find the rider gravely hurt. Police say that on arrival they located a male suffering from life-threatening injuries, setting off an urgent effort to get him to hospital.
That effort ultimately could not save him. He was transported via ambulance on an emergency run to a local trauma hospital, where a short time later he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators have offered an early account of how the crash occurred. According to police, the man lost control of the scooter and rode into oncoming traffic, and they add that he may not have been wearing a helmet at the time.
Following the fatal crash, authorities are using the case as a warning to others. Police are urging riders to be mindful of their surroundings, especially at night, as e-scooters continue to share the road with vehicles across the city.
