Toronto's police chief has revealed that arrests have been made in connection with last month's deadly shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival, according to CBC News. The disclosure came at the end of a news conference, with the chief saying the people responsible for that incident have been apprehended.
The announcement marks the first major development regarding suspects in the July 11th shooting. Police said late in the evening they had been advised that arrests had been made in the investigation, and that a full briefing would follow.
The shooting struck one of the city's most popular summer events, the Salsa on St. Clair street festival. It left two men dead and four others injured, turning a celebration of music and dancing into a scene of violence.
Investigators had previously said they believed the incident was targeted. Two firearms were recovered from the scene, and police noted that almost 13,000 people were in attendance at the festival at the time of the gunfire.
The police chief said more information would be shared at a news conference the following day. He framed the arrests as a significant step, telling reporters he appreciated the opportunity to confirm that those responsible had been taken into custody.
