It was a celebration in northeast Calgary on Friday as the official groundbreaking took place for a new elementary school. The project marks the start of construction on a facility that the local community has been anticipating.
The school will be built for kindergarten to grade 6 students and will be located in the community of Redstone, one of the area's growing neighbourhoods in the city's northeast.
Officials say the project is an important step for the neighbourhood as the area continues to grow, with more families settling in and demand for local services rising.
According to those behind the project, the new school will mean that students can access education within their own community, rather than getting on a bus and travelling to a nearby Catholic school for their schooling.
Keeping the school community-based was described as a key benefit, allowing children to stay close to home and strengthening ties within the rapidly expanding district.
The school is expected to officially open in September 2028, with capacity for about 340 students once it welcomes its first classes.
