The rabbi described the unsettling aftermath in plain terms. Walking through the halls of a sacred space and finding them smelling of smoke, she said, is something nobody wants, capturing the sense of violation felt by a community whose house of worship was meant to be a place of safety rather than a target.
According to police, the attack was deliberate. Montreal police say a suspect broke a window at the Westmount Area Synagogue with the intent of setting the building on fire, turning what could have been a far more destructive incident into an attempted arson that authorities are now treating with evident seriousness.
