A 28-year-old man has been fatally shot in a common area of a Toronto apartment building, with police identifying the victim as Anthony Taylor. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a shooting, arriving to find a man with a gunshot wound and no vital signs.
Despite life-saving measures being performed at the scene, Taylor was pronounced deceased. Police confirmed that one male suspect in his thirties is currently in custody, however several other suspects remain outstanding. As of the time of the police briefing, a firearm had not yet been recovered from the scene.
Police investigators who had the opportunity to speak with family members described Taylor as a beloved and caring family member who loved to cook. The shooting occurred at 8 p.m. when it was still light outside, catching many residents off guard as they were unaware of what had transpired until they began noticing increased police activity around their building.
Residents of the apartment complex expressed shock and concern about the killing. One resident said they felt sad about the situation and that the environment is not good, particularly for families with children. Another resident noted this was not the first violent incident in the building, adding to the sense of insecurity among those living there.
Police blocked off several areas around the apartment complex for a considerable length of time, including the lobby and an area around dumpsters adjacent to the lobby entrance. The investigation is ongoing and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects.
In a separate incident in the Greater Toronto Area, Peel Police announced that a 23-year-old woman is in custody after a deceased newborn child was found in a Brampton residence. Officers responded to a call just before 8:30 p.m. near Kennedy Road North and Williams Parkway, where they located the deceased infant inside the residence.
The woman has been charged with concealing the body of a child after birth and is currently receiving medical attention before a bail hearing. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges facing communities across the Greater Toronto Area, where residents continue to call for enhanced safety measures and stronger police presence in residential areas.
