Power from the Earth
Geothermal energy is, quite literally, power drawn from the heat of the planet itself. Engineers drill deep wells into the ground to reach reservoirs of extremely hot water and steam, which are then brought up to the surface under a great deal of pressure.
That steam is used to spin large turbines, which in turn drive generators and produce electricity. Because the heat beneath the earth never runs out and does not depend on the weather, geothermal offers a steady and dependable supply, day and night, all year round.
The Olkaria Complex

The sheer scale of this resource has transformed the way Kenya powers itself. By 2020 the country had a total installed generating capacity of around two thousand eight hundred megawatts, of which roughly eight hundred and sixty came from geothermal sources alone.
That makes the heat of the earth one of the single largest contributors to the national grid. KenGen, which generates the majority of the country's electricity, reports that around ninety three percent of its own power now comes from renewable sources of energy.
Why the Rift Valley?
Kenya's good fortune is written directly into its geology. The Great Rift Valley is a huge crack in the earth's crust, where the ground is slowly pulling apart and volcanic activity brings intense heat much closer to the surface than in most other places on the planet.
This makes the region unusually rich in accessible geothermal energy, with hot springs, steam vents and shallow reservoirs dotting the landscape. What might elsewhere remain a distant geological curiosity has become, for Kenya, a practical and abundant source of national power.
Building for the Future
Far from resting on its achievements, Kenya continues to expand its geothermal capacity with new wells and additional power stations. Fresh units at Olkaria are being developed to add further megawatts of clean electricity to the grid in the coming years ahead.
The ambition reaches well beyond simple generation, too. Plans have been announced to use this cheap and steady power to attract industry, including the idea of an industrial park run largely on geothermal energy, turning underground steam into new jobs and fresh investment.
A Model for Africa
Kenya now stands as the largest producer of geothermal power on the entire African continent, and as one of the leading nations in this particular field anywhere in the world. Its success has drawn keen attention from other countries hoping to follow a similar path.
The lesson is a powerful one, showing how a nation can turn its own natural landscape into a source of clean, reliable and homegrown energy. In the steam rising gently from the Rift Valley, Kenya has found a quiet but genuine engine of its future.
