Athletics Unveils Its New Ultimate Championship in Budapest With Ten Million Dollars at Stake

Athletics is about to try something new. From the middle of September, the sport will stage the first edition of a competition designed to bring only its very best names together for an intense and high stakes showdown.

The new event arrives at a busy time in the athletics calendar, yet it aims to stand apart. Rather than a sprawling programme open to hundreds, it promises a sharper contest built around champions and the biggest occasions.

A brand new championship

The competition is called the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, and 2026 marks its inaugural edition. Organised by World Athletics as a biennial invitational, it is intended to become a regular fixture every two years.

This first edition takes place from 11 to 13 September 2026 at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. The Hungarian capital, which hosted the World Championships a few years ago, again finds itself at the centre of the sport.

A compact, elite format

One of the defining features is its size. The programme covers 28 events across track and field, but the fields are deliberately small, with track events limited to 16 competitors and field events capped at just 8 athletes.

The schedule is equally tight. Everything is packed into three days of competition, and the programme includes men's, women's and mixed relay categories, adding a team dimension to a contest otherwise focused on individuals.

Ten million dollars on the line

The rewards on offer are substantial. Athletes will compete for shares of a prize pot worth 10 million dollars, one of the richest purses in the sport and a clear signal of the ambition behind the new championship.

Prize money on this scale is designed to attract the biggest stars and to reward them properly. For many athletes, whose earnings can be modest outside the very top tier, such sums represent a meaningful opportunity.

Only champions need apply

Qualification is where the event truly sets itself apart. Direct places are reserved for gold medallists from the 2024 Summer Olympics, gold medallists from the 2025 World Championships, and the winners of the 2026 Diamond League finals.

The remaining spots are filled through the World Athletics Rankings, covering results between September 2025 and September 2026. In the relays, the top six teams from the 2026 World Relays qualify, with one team allowed per country.

How it differs from the Worlds

The contrast with the traditional World Championships is deliberate. Where those events welcome large numbers of athletes across many rounds, this invitational is built specifically around defending Olympic and world champions.

The result should be a leaner and faster spectacle. With fewer competitors and no lengthy heats to work through, organisers hope every race and every final will carry the weight of a genuine title decider.

For fans, the appeal is simple. A short and star studded programme in a single stadium offers the chance to watch many of the world's leading athletes compete against one another over just a few evenings.
