Bank of England asks public to choose animals for new banknotes

The Bank of England has launched a public consultation to choose animals for its new banknote series. A shortlist of 18 species is available for the public to vote on until 3 July, with one animal per denomination across the five, ten, twenty and fifty pound notes.

The Bank of England has launched a public consultation inviting people to choose animals for its new banknote series. A shortlist of 18 species has been drawn up, with one animal to feature on each denomination across the five, ten, twenty and fifty pound notes.

The public can vote on their preferred species until 3 July 2026. Governor Andrew Bailey will make the final decision on which animals appear on the new notes by the end of 2026, based on the results of the consultation.

Among the species on the shortlist are the bottlenose dolphin, the red fox, the Atlantic puffin, the barn owl, the basking shark and the bumblebee. Each animal was selected for its connection to Britain's natural heritage and wildlife.

The redesign will see historical figures currently featured on the reverse of banknotes replaced by animals for the first time. The current five pound note features Winston Churchill, who was chosen in recognition of his role as wartime leader.

The move to nature-themed banknotes represents a significant departure from the Bank of England's traditional approach. Previous notes have featured prominent figures from British history, science and culture including Jane Austen and JMW Turner.

The consultation has already generated strong public interest, with debate over which animals best represent the national character. The Bank of England says the change reflects a desire to celebrate Britain's rich natural environment.

The monarch will continue to appear on the front of all banknotes. The new animal-themed designs are expected to enter circulation once the consultation and design process are complete, though no specific launch date has been announced.
