Italian tennis star Yannick Sinner has become only the second men's player in history, after Novak Djokovic, to complete a golden slam of all nine Masters 1000 titles. He achieved the milestone by winning the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Rome, defeating Kasper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
The victory stretches Sinner's remarkable winning streak to 29 consecutive matches and extends his record run of 34 Masters-level wins. He is the first Italian to take the men's title in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976, a gap of 50 years. Sinner is also on a run of 17 wins without loss on clay this season heading into the French Open.
In the women's final, Ukrainian Alina Svitolina completed a career hat-trick of titles at the Italian Open, beating world number four Coco Gauff in the decisive set. Svitolina had already seen off world number two Alina Rybakina and number three Iga Swiatek in previous rounds on her way to her 20th career title.
Sinner, who is looking to win the French Open for the first time to complete a full set of Grand Slams, described the past two and a half months as incredible. Svitolina said she had been aiming for a round number of 20 titles before finishing her career and thanked her team for their hard work in achieving it.
