Chancellor Reeves announces VAT cut to 5% on summer attractions and free bus travel for children

Rachel Reeves unveiled a summer cost-of-living package including VAT reduction from 20% to 5% on theme parks, museums and cinemas, plus free bus travel for children during school holidays.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a package of summer economic measures headlined by a temporary VAT reduction from 20 percent to 5 percent on summer attractions including theme parks, museums and cinema tickets. The measure is designed to make family outings more affordable during the expensive school holiday period.

The package also includes free bus travel for children during school holidays across England, an extension of the fuel duty freeze until at least the end of the year, and additional support for HGV drivers, farmers and rail freight operators. Reeves cited the ongoing economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East as a key motivation for the intervention.

When challenged by journalists on whether the measures constitute a political gimmick ahead of potential elections, the Chancellor defended them as targeted support for working families during the most expensive months of the year. She pointed to the cumulative effect of rising energy costs, food prices and fuel costs on household budgets.

However, Reeves raised eyebrows when asked whether she supports Keir Starmer continuing as Prime Minister, giving a notably lukewarm response. The Chancellor said let us see what happens in the future while noting there is no vacancy, a guarded answer that has intensified speculation about leadership tensions within the Labour Party.

The measures will take effect from June 1 and run through September, with the government estimating they will save a typical family of four approximately 200 pounds over the summer period. Opposition parties dismissed the package as insufficient given the scale of the cost of living crisis.
