Mohamed Fahir Amaz has been jailed for three and a half years at Liverpool Crown Court over an assault at Manchester Airport that left a police officer with a broken nose. The sentence was handed down nearly two years after the attack.
The victim, PC Lydia Ward, was attacked in July 2024 when she and colleagues tried to arrest a man at the airport. During the violence two police officers were assaulted, with Ward bearing the most serious injury.
Ward suffered a broken nose in the attack. She described being covered in blood, with her nose flattened by the force of the blows she received.
The court heard that Amaz had used the officer as a punching bag during the confrontation. The footage of the assault formed a central part of the case against him.
Amaz was sentenced to a total of three and a half years, equivalent to 42 months in prison. The lead count in the case carried a term of 40 months.
Now a new mother, Ward has returned to policing since the assault. She has spoken about the lasting impact the attack has had on her and on the way she approaches her work.
Ward said she wanted the attacker to understand how his actions had affected her life and to take responsibility for what he did, showing remorse and offering an apology. She said that, so far, she had received no such acknowledgement.
