Four Palestine Action activists jailed for 22 years over Israeli arms factory attack

Four Palestine Action activists have been jailed for a combined total of 22 years and four months at Woolwich Crown Court over an attack on an Israeli arms factory near Bristol in August 2024. A judge ruled that their criminal damage conviction was connected to terrorism, in a decision believed to be a first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The group caused more than one million pounds worth of damage and the attack left a police officer with a fractured spine. The sentencing drew large-scale protests, with the Metropolitan Police arresting more than 70 people.

Four Palestine Action activists have been jailed for a combined total of 22 years and four months over an attack on an Israeli arms factory in England. The sentences were handed down at Woolwich Crown Court, where a judge ruled that their criminal damage conviction was connected to terrorism, in a decision that is believed to be a first of its kind in the United Kingdom.

The case centred on a raid carried out at a site near Bristol in August 2024. According to the court, the group caused more than one million pounds worth of damage at the Israeli arms factory during that raid, the figure cited by the court as the scale of the destruction.

The harm was not limited to property. The attack also left a police officer with a fractured spine, a serious injury that stood alongside the extensive damage as part of the case brought against the four activists over what happened at the site.

The most significant aspect of the case was the judge's ruling that the offences carried a terrorism connection. That finding, attached to a criminal damage conviction, is understood to be a UK first, and it shaped the lengthy custodial sentences imposed on the four defendants who appeared before the court.

The sentencing drew large-scale protests outside Woolwich Crown Court throughout the day. The Metropolitan Police said that more than 70 demonstrators were arrested, with many of those gathered expressing anger at the judge's decision to treat the activists' actions as linked to terrorism rather than as straightforward criminal damage.

Tensions escalated as protesters tried to stop the defendants from being taken away. Demonstrators blocked the prison van believed to be carrying the activists from leaving the court, with some lying down in the road and others banging on the side of the Serco vehicle. Dozens of police officers were seen surrounding the van as the situation unfolded.

Taken together, the outcome combined lengthy custodial sentences, a terrorism ruling understood to be a UK first, and disorder outside the court, where more than 70 people were arrested. The four activists were jailed for a combined 22 years and four months for their role in the attack on the Israeli arms factory near Bristol in August 2024.
