Haven't Planned Your Vacation Yet? Discover Romania

From the sacred peaks of Ceahlău to hidden lakes and campsites where time stands still — a guide to Romania's most underrated destinations.

There are places in Romania that even Romanians don't truly know. The Ceahlău Massif, one of the geologically oldest mountains in the world, remains one of the most underrated corners of the Eastern Carpathians. Not because it's hard to reach, but because people have learned to look for beauty elsewhere.

At its foothills, the resort of Durău lives at a pace that cities forgot long ago. Here, there are no car horns and nobody rushes you. You hear the stream, feel the fir trees and see the night sky the way it looked a hundred years ago.

Ceahlău National Park shelters trails for all levels, from easy walks through ancient forests to serious ascents toward Toaca Peak. The rock formations Duruitoarea and Dochia rise above the clouds on summer mornings, and Dochia Cabin, near the ridge, offers a view that makes every effort worthwhile. Romanians have considered this mountain sacred for centuries. Visitors in 2026 are only now beginning to understand why.

At the base of the massif, Izvorul Muntelui reservoir stretches for dozens of kilometres, making it the largest artificial lake in Romania. Boat trips, fishing, and simply watching the water from a high vantage point are experiences that few places in Europe can still offer without crowds and without an entrance fee.

Less than an hour from Durău, the Bicaz Gorges cut through the mountains in vertical walls hundreds of metres high. The road winds between cliffs in a landscape that seems torn from another geological era. At the end of the gorges, Red Lake sits motionless among dried fir trees, with an atmosphere that no photograph can fully capture.

Of all the accommodation options in the area, Camping Ursuleț in Durău is perhaps the most genuine experience you can have in nature. Conceived as a family business and grown organically over the years, the campsite occupies a generous stretch of nature, crossed by a stream that flows right past the restaurant terrace.

The concept is simple and deliberate: slow tourism. There is no background music, car access is limited, and energy comes from solar panels. The campsite offers generous spaces for tents, equipped spots for caravans and motorhomes, and cabins intentionally designed to be simple, with no pretence of luxury. The sanitary facilities are shared, clean and well organised. The philosophy is clear: comfort comes from nature, not from amenities.

Ursuleț Restaurant follows the same philosophy. The cooking is slow, patient, using ingredients sourced from local producers. Every dish is a return to authentic flavours, and the terrace by the stream provides a setting where you don't just come to eat — you come to pause from everything you were doing.

Camping Ursuleț is not just a summer destination. In winter, the silence gains a new dimension, and the snow transforms the entire landscape into a painting that cities can no longer offer. The warm string lights, the campfire and the cold mountain air create an atmosphere you have to live to understand.

Hiking on Ceahlău at all levels. Cycling on forest roads. Boat trips on the lake. Paragliding or hot air balloon flights above the valleys. Visits to Durău Monastery, one of the oldest monastic settlements in Moldova. Birdwatching and stargazing, far from any artificial light. The area is also part of the Land of the European Bison, a project through which these majestic animals have been reintroduced into the wild.

The Durău area and Camping Ursuleț are not for everyone. They are not for those seeking entertainment, noise or urban comfort. They are for those who feel the need to slow down, to breathe differently and to return to the things that truly matter. They are for those who want to leave more at peace than when they arrived.

If you've read this far, you're probably exactly the kind of person who should go there.
