Two brothers who were lynched by a mob in a case of mistaken identity have been laid to rest in Machakos County. Their deaths have left a community in mourning and prompted renewed calls for answers over how an ordinary night out ended in tragedy.
The victims were identified as Kennedy Katuu Muthungu, aged 29, and his brother Stanley Mbithi Muthungu, aged 22. According to the account given, the two lost their lives while they were heading home after watching a football match.
The chain of events reportedly began when a motorist allegedly accused the brothers of being carjackers. The accusation came shortly after the same motorist had knocked down their friend, setting off the confrontation that turned deadly.
The false accusation was enough to trigger the mob, which turned on the two young men. By the time the violence ended, both brothers had been killed in an attack rooted in a misunderstanding rather than any established wrongdoing.
In connection with the incident, the motorist has since been arrested alongside four other suspects. Their detention marks the first step in an investigation that the bereaved family hopes will establish exactly what happened and hold those responsible to account.
On the day of the burial, there was grief in Nyani village in Wamunyu, Machakos County, as community members and local leaders joined the family to pay their last respects. The mood at the funeral reflected both sorrow over the loss of the two brothers and unease over the dangers of mob justice.
