The Akwa Ibom State government has flagged off the construction of the Ibom Medical City. The project is a healthcare initiative aimed at expanding access to specialist medical services and reducing the need for Nigerians to seek treatment abroad.
According to the report, the project was unveiled by Governor Umo Eno during a ceremony held to mark the commencement of the development. The flag off signals the start of work on what the state government has presented as a major healthcare undertaking.
The ceremony for the unveiling of the project was attended by senior government and sector stakeholders. Among those present was the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, alongside healthcare stakeholders and development partners.
The state government framed the project as another milestone in its efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery. According to the report, Akwa Ibom is seeking to position itself as a destination for quality medical services within Nigeria and beyond.
At the heart of the project is the Ibom International Hospital, which serves as the flagship facility of the medical city. The hospital is intended to anchor the wider healthcare ecosystem that the medical city is designed to create.
In terms of the services to be offered, the facility is expected to cover a range of critical specialties. These include oncology, cardiology, neurology, trauma care and intensive care medicine, areas often associated with the kind of treatment that many patients travel abroad to access.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, described the project as visionary. He noted that the initiative demonstrates how states can utilise available resources to improve healthcare services and drive development.
