The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated a set of medical equipment for a new cancer centre managed by the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Metta, Lagos. The donation was formally marked at a handover ceremony attended by church and hospital representatives.
A General Authority Seventy of the Church said the gesture reflects its commitment to humanitarian projects like this one, which is expected to reach thousands of beneficiaries. He described it as part of a wider effort to bring relief to those in need.
He tied the donation to the Church's core teaching, saying the injunction is to love God and love your neighbour, and that one way to show that love is to ensure people have access to good medical care. The equipment, he said, is meant to facilitate exactly that.
Hospital representatives stressed that health care is not cheap, and neither is the medical equipment needed to deliver it. They noted that much of that equipment is not produced in Nigeria, which, combined with the naira-to-dollar exchange rate, pushes the cost even higher.
For that reason, the donated equipment was welcomed as a significant boost to the cancer centre's capacity. Officials said it will directly improve the services the facility is able to offer its patients.
Those services are expected to span the full spectrum of cancer care, from prevention and diagnosis through to treatment and rehabilitation. The new equipment is intended to strengthen each of those stages for the patients the centre hopes to serve.
