Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress presidential primary, securing the party's ticket for the 2027 general election. He called on fellow contestants to close ranks and join the campaign.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress after winning the party's primary election. The ADC's national chairman congratulated Abubakar, noting that all three aspirants were eminently qualified and had served Nigeria with distinction in important capacities.
In his acceptance remarks, Abubakar appealed to his fellow contestants, Chief Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatuddin, to put the primary behind them and join him in the campaign to win the 2027 general election. He emphasised that there were no winners and no losers in the exercise, and that the party's people looked up to their leadership.
The party chairman placed the trust of the ADC in Abubakar, reminding him of his duty to build bridges and carry every member along. He appealed directly to all contestants to close ranks and build bridges of reconciliation so that the party can achieve its aspirations for the upcoming election cycle.
However, the ADC's internal processes have not been without controversy. In Benue State, an aggrieved governorship aspirant, Geoffrey Caron, has called for the cancellation of the state primary election, filing a petition alleging irregularities including allocation of votes to aspirants whose agents were not present in several wards.
Analysts note that the ADC's capacity to weather internal disputes and maintain unity will be critical to its performance in the 2027 general election. Abubakar, who has contested the presidency multiple times under different parties, now faces the challenge of positioning the ADC as a credible alternative to the ruling party, as reported by Channels Television.
