US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed concerns over alleged racist comments targeting Indians in the United States during a press conference in New Delhi, defending stricter immigration policies and calling America the most welcoming country in the world.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed concerns over alleged racist comments targeting Indians living in the United States, stating at a press conference in New Delhi that every country has stupid people. The remarks came during a diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Washington and New Delhi.
Rubio defended President Donald Trump's stricter immigration policies, noting that the United States has faced a significant migratory crisis in recent years. He stated that over 20 million people had illegally entered the country and that the administration was compelled to address the challenge in its national interest.
Despite the tougher stance on immigration, Rubio described the United States as the most welcoming country in the world, highlighting that approximately one million people become permanent residents each year. He drew on his own family history, noting that his parents entered the US as permanent residents from Cuba in 1956.
The Secretary of State emphasised that immigration policy must be adjusted in every era to the realities of modern times. He acknowledged the significant contributions of legal immigrants to American society while maintaining that the process requires reform to address current challenges.
During the visit, discussions also covered energy issues, with the Indian External Affairs Minister noting that the Indo-Pacific region is set to become a major focus of global energy policy. The diplomatic exchanges underscore the growing strategic partnership between the two nations across multiple sectors, as reported by Channels Television.
