Lagos electoral commission holds by-elections in three council wards

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has conducted by-elections in three wards to fill councillorship vacancies in the state. The polls took place in Ibeju-Lekki Local Council, the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area and Somolu Local Council. Officials monitoring the process said the commission remained committed to conducting credible elections and promoting democratic values at the grassroots, with party agents reporting that voting went smoothly and transparently.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has conducted by-elections in three wards to fill councillorship positions that had fallen vacant in the state. The polls were held to choose new representatives at the council level in the affected areas.

According to the commission, the three positions being filled were spread across Ibeju-Lekki Local Council, the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area and Somolu Local Council. The exercise was therefore limited to these specific wards rather than a state-wide vote.

Officials of the commission who monitored the process reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to conducting credible elections. They stressed that the body remained focused on promoting democratic values at the grassroots level through such exercises.

The commission noted that the by-election could not be equated with a general election such as the one held in July 2025, given its much smaller scale. Despite this, officials described the level of attendance recorded during the exercise as impressive.

Security was a visible part of the exercise, with officials pointing to a notable deployment across the affected wards. According to the account given, there were around 50 deployed in the Odi-Olowo ward, 26 in Somolu and 21 in Ibeju-Lekki, with personnel positioned close to one another at the various points.

Party agents were also present at the different locations where voting took place, observing the process on behalf of their parties. According to the officials, the agents reported that everything had proceeded smoothly and transparently across the wards where the by-elections were held.
