Nigeria's Super Falcons have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). For the first time in the tournament's history, the title holders had to rely on results elsewhere to secure their progress from the group stage.
The defending champions now face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the last eight. The match will be played on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The stakes are high, as at play is not only a place in the semi-finals but also qualification for next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
The Super Falcons' displays in the group stage had been a cause for concern. To reach the last eight, they needed goals, scoring six in the group phase, including two against Egypt.
Despite the difficulties, the players have expressed confidence. They say they are improving with every game and are ready to take the campaign all the way to the end.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, together with some members of the executive, met the players in Rabat. He congratulated the team and promised to mobilise fans to the stadium for Sunday's quarter-final against Cameroon.
