Amotekun arrests 51 suspects moved in two lorries in Ondo State

Officers of the regional security outfit Amotekun Corps in Ondo State have arrested 51 suspects, including women, who were being transported in two lorries and accused of illegally entering forest areas. Security officials say some of those held are linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and support for criminal gangs.

Officers of the regional security outfit known as the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, in the southwestern part of Nigeria, have arrested 51 suspects in a single operation. The group, which included women, was being moved in two lorries when the security operatives intercepted them.

According to security officials, the suspects were accused of illegally entering forest areas in the state. The interception of the two lorries carrying such a large number of people raised concern among the operatives, who moved to detain the group for further checks and questioning.

Officials said the group also includes individuals believed to be linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and burglary, as well as some accused of providing logistic support for criminal gangs. The arrests are being treated as part of wider efforts to curb the activities of such groups in the region.

The Ondo State Amotekun commander, Adetunji Adeleye, said the suspects were intercepted along the Owo Oje axis. He noted that they were travelling with household items, and that some of those held claimed they were fleeing insecurity in the northern part of the country at the time of their arrest.

The commander said investigations would be carried out to determine which of the suspects actually have criminal links. He indicated that the screening process would help separate those who may be connected to criminal activity from others who were simply travelling through the area.

He added that, depending on the outcome of the investigation, the women and children among those arrested may be returned to their respective states. This suggests that not all of those intercepted are expected to face charges, with the security outfit seeking to establish each person's true status.

The operation reflects the continued role of the Amotekun Corps as a regional security outfit in the southwest, working to monitor movement into forest areas often associated with criminal activity. The arrest of the 51 suspects adds to the ongoing efforts by security agencies to address insecurity across the affected communities.
