Nigerian police have arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of a community leader in Anambra State, in an operation carried out by the Special Tactical Squad of the Force Intelligence Department. The arrests were presented as a breakthrough in a case that had drawn attention because of the gruesome nature of the crime and the standing of the victim in the community.
According to the investigation, the killing took place on 24 May 2026. Police say the case had its roots in a long-standing land dispute, a type of conflict that has repeatedly turned deadly in parts of the country, where disagreements over ownership and boundaries can fester for years before erupting into violence.
One of the most striking details to emerge from the investigation is the method used in the killing. Police say the suspects used a veterinary sedative, ketamine hydrochloride, to kill the victim, an unusual account for a case of this kind that has become central to how investigators have described the crime.
Among the exhibits recovered by the police were a syringe and sedative drugs, alongside other items said to have been used in carrying out the crime. The recovery of these materials formed part of the evidence gathered by the tactical squad during the operation that led to the arrests.
Investigators also stated that the money taken from the victim was shared among the suspects after the killing. That element was set out by the police alongside the account of the land dispute they say lay behind the attack, as part of the picture presented following the arrests.
The police said the alleged mastermind of the killing is among those now in custody. Speaking after his arrest, the suspect acknowledged the gravity of what had occurred, saying there was no justification for what happened and that the account of events was true, while declining to say more as the matter heads to court.
The Force Intelligence Department and its Special Tactical Squad presented the arrests as evidence of continued efforts to track down those behind violent crimes across the country. The suspects are expected to face prosecution, with police indicating that the case will now proceed through the courts.
