Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the growth of the newly established University of Agriculture, Science and Technology. He pledged continued backing for the institution as it takes off with its first generation of students.

The governor also called on the private sector and development partners to support the institution's long-term development, stressing that sustained investment would be needed to consolidate the early gains of the young university.

He made the appeal at the university's maiden matriculation ceremony, where 668 pioneer students were formally admitted into various academic programmes. The figure marks the size of the institution's very first intake.

The maiden matriculation, which marks the official commencement of academic activities for its first set of undergraduates, began with the traditional academic procession that is customary at such ceremonies.

In attendance were top government officials led by Governor Alia, alongside academics, traditional rulers, parents and other stakeholders, in a turnout that organisers said reflected growing confidence in the institution's role.

The vice chancellor of the university encouraged the newly admitted students to distinguish themselves both academically and morally as they begin their studies at the institution.

University officials said the school is being built as a skills-driven institution, describing it as a university that teaches, earns and transforms, with an emphasis on practical knowledge for its pioneer students.
