Nigeria commissions a six lane Kuje expressway linking the airport road

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has commissioned a new six lane expressway in Kuje, a major farming community in Abuja. The dual carriageway links the airport expressway to the Kuje area council, spans about 10.5 kilometres and was awarded in February 2022 at a cost of around 54 billion naira, with Vice President Kashim Shettima performing the commissioning.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has commissioned a newly built six lane expressway in Kuje, one of the major farming communities in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory. The project was presented as evidence that the administration is extending infrastructure beyond the city centre and into the wider area councils of the capital.

The dual carriageway links the airport expressway to the Kuje area council and spans about 10.5 kilometres. By tying the council more directly into the main road network around the capital, it is intended to ease the movement of people and goods in and out of the farming district.

According to the broadcast, the road was awarded in February 2022 at a cost of about 54 billion naira. Its completion now closes the gap between the contract and delivery, a point the administration repeatedly stressed during the ceremony.

Officials described the project as a key regional road connecting the northern and southern sides of the Federal Capital Territory. They said it is expected to open the Kuje area council to more rapid development while reducing travel time for residents who use the corridor daily.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, performed the commissioning. He framed the road as the keeping of a pledge, telling those present that the day was not just about commissioning a road but about keeping a promise made when the administration took office.

He added that the current administration does not inherit problems in order to abandon them, but inherits challenges in order to solve them. The remarks were tied to what officials repeatedly referred to as the renewal agenda guiding the federal government's infrastructure drive.

The Kuje expressway, presented during the broadcast as part of a wider batch of projects, is one of several infrastructure developments the FCT administration says it is rolling out across all the area councils of the capital. Officials indicated that further commissionings are scheduled in the coming days.
