At least two fish farms were affected by a fire off Lorong Halus jetty, near Pulau Ubin in Singapore, on Wednesday night. According to CNA International, no one was injured in the incident.
Despite the absence of casualties, the blaze caused significant damage. One farmer is facing more than 120,000 Singapore dollars in losses as a result of the fire at the affected farm.
The fire broke out at a fish farm in the waters near Pulau Ubin and took hours to put out. CNA was at the scene as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, with the blaze located about two kilometres from the entrance of the Lorong Halus jetty.
According to the report, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities have yet to determine what triggered the blaze at the offshore farming site.
An association representing fish farmers said the incident has reignited conversation on the challenges the industry faces in securing insurance, an issue that has long weighed on operators of such farms.
The fire underscores the vulnerability of Singapore's offshore aquaculture sites, where operators contend with both the risk of damaging incidents and the difficulty of obtaining adequate coverage to protect their livelihoods.
