A line of severe storms spawned tornadoes across parts of Illinois and Indiana, with a tornado tearing through the town of Effingham, Illinois. The storm started on the north side of Effingham and then moved east into the neighbouring community of Teutopolis, leaving a trail of damage behind it.
As the tornado moved through, it knocked down trees and tore into homes. One house was destroyed, with witnesses describing how it lost its shingles, then its roof, before being obliterated. There was nobody inside that home at the time, and no one was hurt there.
A little farther down the road, another house was wiped off its foundation. One person was reported to have suffered a broken ankle, which was described as a minor injury given how much worse the outcome could have been.
Tornado warnings were in effect across Edwards, Wabash and Wayne counties as the system pushed through the region. A tornado had been confirmed earlier near Clay City, although that one was said to have had little staying power before weakening.
The same severe weather extended into Indiana. Greencastle recorded a wind gust of more than 70 miles per hour, while a tornado warning was issued for Spencer and a powerful storm moved through the Bloomington area as forecasters tracked rotation on radar.
Another tornado was confirmed north of Mount Vernon as the storms continued to move across the area. Warnings remained in place for several counties, with crews and storm spotters monitoring the system for further activity through the evening.
