Last week's record-breaking heat wave turned deadly in New Jersey, where at least 25 people died in heat-related deaths, according to Governor Mikey Sherrill. Last week's record-breaking heat wave turned deadly in New Jersey, where at least 25 people died in heat-related deaths across the state, according to Governor Mikey Sherrill.

The deaths were spread across 10 counties in New Jersey during what officials described as the hottest stretch of weather the region has seen in more than 14 years.

Most of the victims died in the central and northern parts of the state, many of them in homes that did not have air conditioning to provide relief from the dangerous heat.

The toll has continued to be reviewed as more cases are examined. In a later update, officials reported that there were 29 suspected heat-related deaths throughout New Jersey tied to the heat.

Across the river, the picture was different. In New York, officials said that so far there had been no reports of any heat-related deaths, even as the same record temperatures gripped the city.

The losses underscored the dangers of extreme heat, which is the top weather-related killer in the United States, ahead of flooding. Officials continued to urge residents to stay hydrated and to check on vulnerable neighbours as hot weather persisted.
