Costco gas stations see record demand as tanker trucks refuel several times daily while Rockland County introduces gas tax cap for relief

Costco reports the highest gas demand it has ever seen, with many stations requiring tanker truck deliveries several times per day. Meanwhile, Rockland County has introduced a gas sales tax cap saving drivers about 1.60 dollars per fill-up.

Costco has reported that its gas stations are experiencing the highest demand the company has ever seen, with many locations becoming so overwhelmed that tanker trucks are needed to replenish fuel supplies several times per day. The surge in demand comes as American drivers increasingly seek out discounted fuel amid persistently high gas prices driven by the Iran war.

According to US News and World Report, drivers save approximately 10 to 30 cents per gallon when filling up at Costco compared to regular gas stations. With the average price of regular gasoline in New Jersey sitting at around 4.38 dollars per gallon, down 12 cents from a week ago but still dramatically higher than the 3.02 dollars per gallon drivers were paying at the same time last year, those savings are drawing unprecedented numbers of customers.

The gap of approximately 1.36 dollars per gallon between current prices and year-ago levels reflects the sustained impact of the Iran conflict on global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian chokehold, and despite occasional diplomatic progress, the resulting supply constraints continue to keep prices elevated at the pump across the United States.

In response to the ongoing price pressure, Rockland County in New York has introduced a gas sales tax cap that went into effect today. Under the new rule, the county's four percent sales tax on gasoline will be applied only to the first three dollars per gallon rather than the full retail price. With gas approaching five dollars per gallon in the county, the cap is expected to save drivers approximately 1.60 dollars per fill-up.

County Legislator Beth Davidson sponsored the resolution, which was unanimously passed by the legislature and signed by County Executive Ed Day. Rockland County lawmakers took similar action back in 2022 when gas prices soared as the economy was still in post-pandemic recovery, providing a precedent for the current intervention.

The tax cap affects only the county portion of the sales tax, with state per-gallon taxes and other fees remaining in place. While the savings may appear modest on a per-gallon basis, they add up over time for regular commuters and represent one of the few tools available to local governments seeking to provide relief from energy costs driven by international geopolitical factors beyond their control.

The combination of record Costco demand and local tax relief measures paints a picture of American consumers actively seeking every available avenue to reduce their fuel costs. As the Iran situation shows no signs of quick resolution and the OPEC ministerial meeting approaches this weekend, gas prices are likely to remain a central concern for households and policymakers across the country.
