Congress is now investigating New Jersey's voter registration scandal, according to News 12 New Jersey. The move opens a federal inquiry into how thousands of non-citizens came to be registered to vote in the state.
The House Judiciary and Administration committees sent a letter to Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell, the station reported. The letter gives him until August 17 to turn over all requested information.
The request concerns some 6,600 non-citizens who were improperly registered to vote through a state agency, according to News 12.
The governor has called the issue a software glitch, the station reported.
But in their letter, the committee members stated that, according to the vendor Idemia, the registration of non-citizens appears to have ended only when the agency asked Idemia to change certain settings in June of 2024, the station reported.
Even so, the non-citizens were not removed from the voter rolls, and the issue was not publicly disclosed until now, according to News 12.
The committee members say they want to know why, the station reported, as they press the state for the requested records by their deadline.
