NYC Mayor Mondani fires Sheriff Anthony Miranda and names retired NYPD officer Edwin Raymond as replacement

New York City Mayor Mondani has fired Sheriff Anthony Miranda and appointed Edwin Raymond, a retired NYPD officer with 15 years of service, as the new sheriff. The Deputy Sheriff's Benevolent Association welcomed the change, saying the workforce had been marginalized and retaliated against under Miranda's unchecked reign.

New York City Mayor Mondani has fired Sheriff Anthony Miranda and named Edwin Raymond as his replacement. Raymond is a retired NYPD officer who spent 15 years on the force, including serving as commanding officer of community affairs for Patrol Borough Brooklyn North before retiring in 2023.

No official reason has been given for Miranda's dismissal. However, the NYC Deputy Sheriff's Benevolent Association offered pointed criticism of the former sheriff in a statement welcoming the change, saying the workforce had been marginalized, demonized and retaliated against because of the mismanagement from former Sheriff Anthony Miranda's unchecked reign.

The union added that it is time for a fresh start in the New York City Sheriff's Office and expressed its readiness to work with the incoming sheriff. The statement suggests deep institutional friction between Miranda's leadership and the rank-and-file deputies who serve under the office.

Raymond's appointment comes as the Mondani administration faces multiple challenges across city agencies. On the same day, a new class action lawsuit was filed accusing the city's Administration for Children's Services of illegally removing children from their homes without court orders and disproportionately targeting Black and Latino families.

The NYC Sheriff's Office is responsible for enforcing court orders, collecting debts owed to the city, conducting warrants and regulating certain business activities. The leadership transition marks one of several personnel moves the mayor has made in recent weeks as his administration seeks to address criticism of various city agencies.
