NVIDIA has broken ground on a new facility in Fort Worth, Texas, that could become a major hub for the production of artificial intelligence supercomputers on American soil. The move plants one of the biggest names in the AI boom firmly in North Texas, at a moment when the machines that power the technology are in soaring demand and short supply.
The scale of what will be built there is striking. According to the company, the supercomputers produced at the Fort Worth factory will each weigh around two tons and carry a price tag of roughly 4 million dollars. Once assembled, the advanced systems are destined to be shipped out to data centers where they will crunch the enormous workloads behind AI generation.
That downstream demand is exactly what has some residents worried. Those data centers consume vast amounts of energy to keep the AI models running, and many people in the area have voiced concern about the environmental footprint of the sprawling infrastructure that the industry increasingly relies on to grow.
NVIDIA's chief executive, who was on hand for the groundbreaking, sought to push back on those fears, arguing that the worries are overblown. He said the older generation of data centers used a great deal of water and relied on evaporative cooling technology, whereas the newer systems are now fully liquid cooled through recirculation, which he said keeps water use extremely low.
The company's leader went further, framing efficiency as a reason to embrace rather than fear the new facilities. He said the energy efficiency of the modern systems is incredibly high, and encouraged anyone anxious about data centers to focus instead on replacing the older, more wasteful ones that came before them.
Local officials, however, are moving cautiously. City leaders have been trying to address the growing concerns over the impact of AI data centers, and the Fort Worth City Council is set to vote next month on a measure that would temporarily halt the construction of new data centers while those questions are worked through.
The result is a tension that is playing out in Fort Worth much as it is elsewhere across the country: the promise of high-profile investment and cutting-edge manufacturing on one side, and unresolved worries about energy, water and the strain on local resources on the other. For now, the groundbreaking marks a concrete step forward even as the debate over what comes next is far from settled.
