State officials in Minnesota, working alongside the FBI, are trying to determine who is behind a wide-scale cyber attack that has targeted the state's drinking water infrastructure. According to the account, the intrusion reached more than 30 water treatment systems across Minnesota, turning a routine utility function into the focus of a criminal investigation.
The most concrete impact was felt in the tiny city of Brom, where the attackers managed to interfere directly with the water supply. Officials said the hackers were able to shut down the flow of water from the well and water treatment plant that serves the community, cutting off the normal source that residents rely on for their daily needs.
With the plant knocked offline, the city had to fall back on the water it had already banked. Officials were forced to provide clean water that was still stored in the city's water tower, using that reserve to keep supplies flowing to residents while the treatment system itself remained compromised.
Brom was not alone. The city says it was informed that at least four other communities had been attacked with the same result, a detail that points to a coordinated campaign rather than an isolated breach. The pattern of identical outcomes across multiple towns underscored the scale of what investigators are dealing with.
Local officials sought to reassure the public that the water itself remained safe to use. In a statement, the city explained that when an event like this arises, operators can switch to running the system through manual operations, a step taken specifically to ensure that the quality and the quantity of the water are not affected.
As of the latest update, the central question of who carried out the attack remained unanswered. Minnesota officials said authorities have not yet identified those responsible, and both state investigators and the FBI were continuing to examine how the systems were breached and by whom.
Even so, suspicion has begun to point in one direction. Sources indicated that a number of officials suspect hackers tied to Iran may be involved, in part because of the ongoing conflict unfolding in the Middle East. That theory is reinforced by the nature of the operation itself: rather than seeking to blackmail victims for ransom payments, the attacks appear designed simply to disrupt services, a goal that officials say fits a state-linked motive more than a criminal one.
