AgriPlanta-RomAgroTec 2026 opens Thursday in Fundulea, IRRIGSHOW highlights Romania's irrigation future and food security

Romania's most important agricultural fair, AgriPlanta-RomAgroTec 2026, takes place from May 28 to 31 in Fundulea, Calarasi County, with over 250 exhibitors from 30 countries and live field demonstrations. The IRRIGSHOW conference will address progress on the 1.5 billion euro National Irrigation Rehabilitation Programme.

Romania's most important agricultural exhibition, AgriPlanta-RomAgroTec 2026, opens its gates on Thursday, May 28, and will run until Sunday, May 31, at the Fundulea platform in Calarasi County. Organised by DLG Markets South East Europe in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Agency for Land Improvements, the event brings together over 250 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, attracting approximately 20,000 visitors in recent editions. The programme includes live demonstrations of soil work, sowing, crop protection and agricultural drone use, alongside parades of state-of-the-art equipment.

The centrepiece of this year's edition is IRRIGSHOW, the irrigation conference that has become a tradition of the event. On Thursday from 10:00, specialists from ANIF and MADR will discuss the theme 'Irrigated Romania, water as a vital resource for rational use and agricultural production optimisation'. Participants will examine the progress of the National Programme for the Rehabilitation of Primary and Secondary Irrigation Infrastructure, launched in 2017, a programme worth a total of 1.5 billion euros from the national budget, with a completion deadline of 2027.

Romania currently has approximately 3.1 million hectares equipped for irrigation, of which 2.6 million hectares are considered viable. Nevertheless, the area actually irrigated annually remains significantly below the existing potential, at around 500,000 hectares, highlighting the major gap between infrastructure capacity and its actual use. The national programme aims to expand the irrigated area from 1.8 to 2.6 million hectares by increasing the number of projects from 101 to 189, while an additional 500 million euros from European funds is earmarked for on-farm secondary infrastructure.

The IRRIGSHOW conferences will address essential topics for farmers, presented in accessible language adapted to field realities. Topics include practical solutions for the rational use of water as a finite natural resource, drawing up crop irrigation plans, calculating irrigation norms according to crop type, and optimal watering periods. A recent memorandum between ANIF and its American counterpart gives Romania the opportunity to adopt American know-how in irrigation infrastructure, technology and easier access to financing.

Dr Radu Antohe, university lecturer at the Faculty of Agrifood and Environmental Economics at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies and technical partner of DLG Intermarketing, brought details of this edition to public attention through the agroexpert-tv.ro platform. 'Without water, nothing can be done in agriculture and beyond!', emphasises Dr Antohe, adding that 'thanks to the involvement of a handful of specialists still at ANIF today, farmers will concretely understand what irrigated Romania means'. The expert, also involved in developing the American-model irrigation strategy for the Siret-Baragan canal and the Buzau and Arges rivers, invites all interested parties to attend the IRRIGSHOW conference on Thursday from 10:00.

At a time when climate change is putting increasing pressure on agricultural production and droughts are becoming more frequent in southern and south-eastern Romania, irrigation represents not just a necessity but an essential condition for ensuring food security. AgriPlanta-RomAgroTec 2026 provides the ideal framework for direct dialogue between farmers and specialists, for knowledge and technology transfer, and for identifying practical solutions to transform Romanian agriculture into a high-performing and sustainable sector. Access to the event is available through free online registration or by purchasing an entry ticket, daily between 09:00 and 18:00.
