A teenager in the Bronx is recovering after what his family describes as a brutal and unprovoked attack, carried out while he was doing something as ordinary as walking to school. The assault, in the Westchester Square area, has left a 15-year-old shaken and his mother searching for answers, while police look for the person responsible.
At the center of the case is a 15-year-old named Elijah. According to his account, he was set upon by a stranger who gave no warning. The teen says the man punched him multiple times before he managed to break away and run, an attack that turned an everyday walk into something frightening.
His mother, Emily Ann Montez, laid out when and where it happened. She says the attack took place on Friday morning, as her son was walking to school. The location was near Williams Bridge Road, in the Westchester Square area, only minutes away from the school he was heading to.
In the middle of the ordeal, the teenager reached out for help. As he was running away from his attacker, Elijah called his mother. That phone call, made while he was still fleeing, captured how sudden and terrifying the encounter had been for a boy on his way to class.
The attacker, for his part, did not linger at the scene. He ran off in the opposite direction from Elijah, and was later seen on surveillance video walking in the area. That footage has become part of the effort to identify and track down the man behind the assault.
