Eight people have been charged with impersonating shipping carriers as part of a multi-state retail theft ring. According to investigators, the group would find out about deliveries, pretend to be the legitimate shipping companies, and stole almost five million dollars in goods from logistics sites.
The stolen goods were then brought to New York City to be sold on the black market. The operation spanned multiple states and involved a sophisticated scheme of intercepting shipments by posing as authorized carriers.
In the Bronx, over three point three million dollars worth of stolen cigarettes were recovered by authorities during the investigation. The cigarette seizure represents one of the largest recoveries in the case.
Investigators believe there could be more cases like this connected to the ring, so the investigation remains ongoing. Law enforcement is looking into whether additional suspects may have been involved in the operation.
The scheme worked by the suspects identifying scheduled deliveries to logistics sites and then showing up posing as representatives of legitimate shipping companies to collect the goods before the real carriers arrived.
The stolen goods were transported to New York City where they entered the black market for resale. The three point three million dollars in cigarettes recovered in the Bronx were among the largest single seizures made during the investigation.
Investigators said the investigation is ongoing as they believe there could be additional cases connected to the theft ring. The scheme targeted logistics sites across multiple states before the stolen goods were funnelled into New York City.
